UCB Theatre

Improv and Sketch Comedy Home By Anna Graizbord

Breeding ground for many influential comedy figures.

The Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) Theatre, since its creation in 1999, has been a breeding ground for some of the most visible and influential figures in comedy, not to mention in independent and mainstream film, theater, and television. Originally a cutting-edge sketch and improvisation troupe created by Amy Poehler and colleagues, UCB Theatre's foundation stems largely from the philosophy of Chicago's Second City troupe, a major force in improv theater since the 1950s. More specifically, Second City's most well-known instructor Del Close and his signature "Harold" long-form improvisational structure shaped UCB Theatre's framework and output from its beginning. Though UCB's training program includes structured classes, stage performances, and direction, one of the most crucial pedagogic elements is that performers are allowed and encouraged to find their own voices. Some notable performers and alumni include idiosyncratic comedic talents like Adam McKay, Aubrey Plaza, Aziz Ansari, Maria Bamford, and Zach Galifianakis.
