For Now
Sculpture By Kyana GordonWearable costumes as sculpture.
Nick Cave's For Now show at the Mary Boone gallery is an artistic spectacle to behold. On a platform stood several dozen Soundsuits in the center of a large room, positioned like a shimmering party of oddball characters. As if trying to out-do one another, many featured bold colors and were adorned with found materials including sequins, dyed human hair, sock monkeys, dogwood twigs, tin noise makers, stuffed animals, and ceramic bird figurines, which Cave suggests are protective armor for the spirit. They are stand-alone works but are also used in performance pieces, in which dancers wear the costumes. The intricate attention to detail in the many Soundsuits and the vast array of items used to create them is mind blowing, as if the artist's imagination could not be contained. What's more these faceless figures are devoid of any cultural, religious, or ethnic signifiers, allowing visitors to experience them without preconceived notions. Original and strikingly beautiful, the show is a reminder of a show's ability to inspire and amaze.
