Critical Roots and Branches: The Magnetic Fields
Stephin Merritt's latter-day persona as indie rock's answer to Irving Berlin obscures his earlier connections to the international pop underground. Influenced by danceable synth-pop, post-punk minimalism, soundtrack music and the New Zealand popsters of the '80s, Merritt has explored them all in the Magnetic Fields and his many other bands.
